Founded in 1975, Signmasters Inc. began as a one-man operation when James “Rick” Ricketts started hand-painting custom commercial signs out of his garage with nothing more than a brush, a can of paint, and an unwavering commitment to quality craftsmanship. After serving 20 years in the United States Navy as a Technical Illustrator, Rick brought precision, discipline, and artistic skill to the sign industry—foundations that would define the company for decades to come.

In 1980, Rick opened the doors to the company’s first shop in Virginia Beach, expanding services to include vehicle lettering, banners, show cards, and large-scale murals and graphics. As the business grew, so did its capabilities. By the early 1980s, Signmasters expanded into advanced production methods, eventually becoming one of the first companies in the Hampton Roads region to bring digital and large-format printing to the forefront of modern signage. From traditional hand painting to cutting-edge digital production, Signmasters has continuously evolved while remaining true to its roots.

Rick was among the last generation of true hand-lettering artisans, and his dedication to excellence laid the groundwork for Signmasters’ reputation. Over the years, the company became a pioneer in transit bus and fleet vehicle wraps and remains a leader in comprehensive commercial signage solutions. Family has always been at the heart of Signmasters. Rick’s wife, Linda, continues to play an active and valued role in the company today. His son, Rick Jr., carries on the family tradition, helping to carry on his legacy in the sign industry. His daughter, Lisa, and his grandson, Jake—whom he loved very much—remain an enduring source of pride and inspiration.
